COT – Honoring the victims and heroes of the April 16, 2007 tragedy at Virginia Tech
I was a Junior living in my fraternity house on campus when we heard that the school had cancelled classes. We really didn’t know what was happening, we had heard that there was a shooting in a dorm and the perpetrator was not yet in custody. My suitemate had finished an exam early (because he is one of the smartest people I know, and takes tests very quickly) and was already back to our house when the announcement had been made that the school was locked down. His exam was in Norris Hall where the perp shot and killed 30 more innocent people. I didn’t know the magnitude of the situation until around noontime when the death count began to be reported. The cell phone service that morning was under heavy traffic and it was hard to get through to others to make sure they were OK. Thankfully I got through to a friend at UVA and other friends that passed along to my family that I was safe. My dad was deployed to Kuwait at the time, and I emailed him that morning. I think about those events every week, sometimes days in a row. A famous email circulated the school from Bryan Cloyd in the Accounting Dept, please read it if you can hold back the tears. I couldn’t even get through the whole thing today during COT:
Dear ACIS 3314 Students,
My family’s worst fears were confirmed a few hours ago. My
daughter, Austin Michelle Cloyd, was one of the victims in Norris
Hall. She would have been 19 years old next Tuesday. My family hurts
deeply for the loss of our precious baby. We ask that you pray for us
and for the rest of the Virginia Tech community that has suffered so
greatly.
At this point I don’t know how or where our class will continue.
The guest speakers scheduled for April 25 and April 30 may carry on,
but in a different location. Expect to receive an email from
Professor Brown or an announcement on Blackboard about this.
If we don’t meet again, your final assignment from me is perhaps the
most important lesson you will learn in life. Go to your mother,
father, brothers and sisters and tell them with all your heart how
much you love them. And tell them that you know how much they love
you too. Go out of your way to make good memories. At some point,
these memories may be all you have left.
May God bless you all,
Bryan
There are countless heroes from this event that uplifted the Virginia Tech community: Corps of Cadets, civilian students, professors, athletes, coaches, law enforcement, medical professionals, the people of the New River Valley, and the many friends/family who reached out to us as members of Hokie Nation.
They never quit, and won’t ever quit, EVER.
Live your life here on Earth to the fullest of your potential, tell your loved ones that you appreciate them and need their love, don’t take your time with them for granted.
