The Thang

  • Divide into two teams; YHC contributed to each team due to odd numbers
  • Mosey up the hill the steep way
  • Circle the crest on the hill and stop at the bottom to pick a rock
  • Bring rock to top of hill and choose a card
  • Perform exercises on the card with the following rep count
    • 2-10 = that # of reps
    • J = 11 reps
    • Q = 12 reps
    • K = 13 reps
    • Ace = 15 reps
    • Joker = 30 burpees
  • Exercises as follows:
    • Diamonds
      • Round 1 = LL Cool Js
      • Round 2 = burpees x 2
      • Round 3 = 4-count Bonnie Blairs
    • Hearts
      • Round 1 = V-ups
      • Round 2 = Decline crab jacks (4-count)
      • Round 3 = Xs and Os
    • Spades
      • Round 1 = Merkins
      • Round 2 = Shoulder taps
      • Round 3 = Irkins
    • Clubs
      • Round 1 = Thrusters
      • Round 2 = Curls x 2
      • Round 3 = Bent over rows x 2
  • Upon completion of exercises on card, add rock to a team cairn
  • At the end of 9 minute rounds, team with the tallest cairn gets one more free card
  • Make the best 5-card poker hand as a team
  • Return all rocks
  • Repeat for 3 rounds

  • Lots of mumble chatter about who chose this or that rock as the cairns grew and toppled due to large, lumpy rocks
  • Several team members spent time trying to correct the unstable cairns during the round, prompting YHC to remind the PAX that there was only one card on the line; PAX may have been actively recovering from the exercises as they arranged rocks
  • In the end, team one had the tallest cairn when the clock stopped at only three rocks high; both teams’ cairns toppled with around 8-9 rocks right before time stopped
  • Park administration yelled at us to stop touching the rocks towards the end of round one; therefore, round two did not include stacking rocks
  • Team two one the first round with a straight flush and the second round with four aces
  • Ran low on time so round three was held at the flags and all participated in the exercises as one team

  • Growruck Training Event (GTE) in March in Greenville, NC
