COT – Morals and Standards: LIV (54) Tour
A lot has been happening in the last week with professional golf. The LIV (54) Tour hosted their first event in London this past weekend. The new tour is designed to cater to higher end golfers:
- Monster signing bonuses
- HUGE purses
- 54 holes
- 8-10 events a year
The tour is financially backed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and many fans/journalist/tour players are critical of the KSA funding. I have strong issues with it too. Are we really going to sell out directly to them? I fill up Saudi fuel in my car, so does that make me a hypocrite if I would refuse to join the new tour? What about young players who have been promised years’ worth of PGA Tour earnings by signing their name? What about older players who will likely not ever make that kind of money the last few years of their career?
The PGA Tour has suspended players for signing with LIV Golf.
I’ve been talking about it with golf friends all weekend and if I were a professional golfer, I wouldn’t go…even for $200million. Call me crazy or even a hypocrite, but it might be a last stand for our culture and society. What are our morals and standards?
