The Story of St. John of the Cross and James 1. John was a 16th century monk who pushed reforms of his order and for this was imprisoned. While in prison, John developed a desperate loneliness and a sense of abandonment from God. Through years a prayer and longing he found his way back to Jesus and documented it in his poem The Dark Night of the Soul.
After reading James 1 this weekend I thought of St John’s story. James 1:2-4 reads “My brothers and sisters,[b] whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; 4 and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.”
