Archives: Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855)

  • When: 20180110
  • QIC: Dreamliner
  • The PAX: Deflator, Dreamliner
  • Since the 2.0s were out of school again today, the PAX will attend in their place. The most well-known/circulated story about Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), one of the greatest mathematicians, was from primary school where he quickly and accurately summed the numbers from 1 to 100 (= 5050). Credit: https://nrich.maths.org/2478. A small deviation from his formula is the sum of consecutive odd numbers and even numbers. We will need this for the backblast.

    Sum of odd numbers from 1 to n for n=19.
    N = # of odd numbers = (n+1)/2 = (19+1)/2 = 10
    Sum = N^2 = 10^2 = 100

    Sum of even numbers between n1 and n2 for n1 = 2 and n2 = 18.
    N = # of even numbers = (n2-n1)/2+1 = (18-2)/2+1 = 9
    Sum = N(n2+n1)/2 = 9(18+2)/2 = 90

    Each PAX grabs set of 25 lb. dumbbells.

    4 Corners: Around parking lot, curls in corner 1, merkins in corner 2, crunchy frogs (IC) in corner 3, and Carolina dry docks in corner 4. 10 reps of each for first four laps. 20 reps on lap five.

    Farmer carry to front of school.

    Curl/Shoulder Press Ladder: This is where Carl Friedrich Gauss comes in. For each pole (1 to 19), curls equal to pole number for every odd pole, shoulder presses on the evens. All told, 100 curls and 90 shoulder presses.

    Overhead (1 dumbbell) lunge back to beginning of poles. Retrieve second dumbbell.

    Farmer carry to overhang on side of school.

    Quick two sets of dealer’s choice.

    Farmer carry to car. Mosey to shovel flags.

    Five minutes of Mary.

    Addiction is a very real thing for many of us. It’s not only drugs and alcohol. It’s food, hobbies, anything that we put in front of God. It takes only yourself to fall into addiction. It takes help to get out. Find an accountability partner who you are comfortable sharing your struggles with.
