The Thang:
We took 2 laps around pond. Then we played BurpJam. It’s a game of Kan-Jam, but you have to do a burpie for every point the opposing team gets. While they throw you and your teammate plank or hold six inches. The losers each round will have done 21 Burpees. We played two whole games. Then we had a 20 count and moseyed to the picnic tables. At the table, we did: 10 box jumps OMC. 10 derkins OMC. 10 dips OMC. 10 Big Boy Sit-Ups OMC w/feet on table. Then repeated all 4. Then we had another 20 count and moseyed to the BurpJam again. (At this point I had planned to combine ultimate frisbee and Kan-Jam to make “Ultimate FrizKan” (Ultimate frisbee, but to score you have to hit the KanJam. No can guarding. 1st drop=5 burpies, 2nd=4, 3rd=3, 4th=2, 5th=1, none after that.) But since we only had 4 paxs and for time’s sake, we played BurpJam again to break our tie.

I have been reading through the Gospel of Mark. In chapter 10, a rich man comes to Jesus and asks how to enter the kingdom of God. He claims to be moral, but Jesus tells him he still needs to do something else. Give his things to the needy and follow Jesus. Ironically, he claimed to have kept the law but when Jesus really challenged him to do what Jesus claimed summed up the whole law–love God and love others– he walked away unwilling to do it. Jesus went on to famously talk about how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom, but that all things are possible with God. Here’s what struck me that I shared with the guys.
It says Jesus LOVED him. His command doesn’t immediately seem loving, but Jesus loved him enough to tell him what was most valuable: people (“the poor”) and God (“follow me”). This man left sad because in his heart, he valued his things more than people and God. It challenged me, because so often I don’t treasure the things that are truly valuable in life. I like boats, trucks, etc. But Jesus loves me enough to tell me those things aren’t of ultimate value. I want to give myself more towards the things that matter most: people and Jesus. My challenge to the guys was simple– treasure what’s truly valuable. Live for them. Give yourself to them. To be honest, it’s impossible to do that on our own. We (especially me) love things too much. But with God, all things are possible.
